WALRUS SKULLS & ARCTIC IVORY

These Skulls are taken in the High Canadian Arctic by Inuit hunters. All skulls are cleaned and pyroxided. Walrus are listed under CITES Appendix lll and therefore requires a CITES Export Permit. Also a Veterinarian Certificate and a Marine Mammal Transportation License is required for export. The Marine Mammal Act forbids this item to be exported to the USA.

The skull of a walrus is very unique. It is heavy and solid. The immense weight of a walrus's skull is believed to aid the mammal when breaking ice in order to create breathing holes. The ivory tusks are also heavy in weight and are very distinctive from male to female. The male upper canines grow larger than the females. The males use their tusks to attract the females during the breeding season. They are also use for defence against predators such as polar bears. The tusks also allow the walrus to haul themselves onto the ice flows as well as for leverage.
